DeraillThe rear derailleur: how it works and which one to buy
The rear derailleur is attached to the bike frame by means of a support, the rear derailleur PENDINO, which in turn is attached to the frame. This prevents the frame from breaking in the event of an accidental fall.
Before purchasing a rear derailleur, it is important to understand how it works.
The rear derailleur consists of a parallelogram structure and a rocker arm that contains springs and rollers. The shape of the rear derailleur varies from one model to another, but the function remains the same for both 7-speed and 12-speed rear derailleurs.
However, there are differences between the various types of rear derailleur.
For example, the rear derailleur of a mountain bike, which has ratios with a considerable difference between the smallest and largest chainring, must have a longer rocker arm compared to a racing bike, which has a smaller difference between these two ratios. This is also due to the fact that racing bikes use a double/triple crankset compared to the current MTB standard, which uses a single crankset.
There are different types of rear derailleurs for bicycles on sale, which we can distinguish mainly by manufacturer brand; the most marketed brands are Shimano, Campagnolo and Sram, which are undoubtedly the three most popular brands on the road bike and MTB bike market, depending on the market segment. Other brands such as Sunrace are also gaining their share of the market with products of good quality but cheaper than the competition, thus putting on the market excellent products with a great quality/price ratio.
The choice of rear derailleur or rear derailleur always depends on the type of bike.
On a racing bike we will mount an ultra professional rear derailleur, for example a Shimano Ultregra or a Sram Force.
On a MTB front bike we will use a Shimano XTR or a Sram X01, on an enduro or E-enduro we will use a Shimano XT rear derailleur but also a Sram GX.
On a city bike we can mount a Shimano or Sunrace rear derailleur, which in their cheaper versions work perfectly on bikes of this type.
In addition to the rear derailleur, we must also consider the bike controls for changing gears and the derailleur, which are fundamental components and are all part of the shifting action on any bicycle with gears.
